St. Gabriel of Georgia is an example of Charity in our day and age. St. Gabriel was born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1929 under the soviet communist reign. He took the angelic vows and was made a monk in 1955. Ten years later, he burned a banner of Lenin at a parade in Tbilisi for international worker’s day. From building behind the burning banner, he gave a sermon chastising the people for bowing down to idols. The crowd fell upon him, beat him, spat on him so badly that he was unrecognizable, almost dead. He was put in a mental hospital for 7 months and found to be psychotic, was released and the priesthood was taken away from him. He spent the remainder of his years attached to a church near the St. Nino convent, and was often found dumpster diving for icons that people got rid of out of fear of being found by the communists.
